Despite losing an eye in a 2009 shootout, Sherif El-Shami is not letting that keep him from moving up in his law-enforcement career.

The 29-year-old El-Shami, an officer with Orange City Police Department, returned to patrol duty three months after he was shot three years ago, losing his left eye. He now uses a prosthetic eye, and after two years as a road patrol officer, El-Shami saw a chance in April to move up in his job when an opening for a detective at his department became available.

He applied for the position.

“I told them that one of my goals has always been to become an investigator,” El-Shami said recently in a telephone interview.
