Dogs help officials find drugs during traffic stops

The California Highway Patrol is taking even more steps to take a bite out of crime and, for officers in the department’s K-9 unit, they have legal teeth to back them — literally.

Freed from the responsibility of responding to the traffic accidents that constantly litter the roadway, these officers have the opportunity to, in their words, take a more “proactive approach” to stopping lawbreakers in their tracks, with a special emphasis on curtailing the drug trafficking that runs rampant from the U.S.-Mexico border northward.
