Man, dog develop special bond as K9 co-workers in Oakland Co.

A barking dog ring tone cut through the quiet in the waiting area of the airport cargo building.

Oakland County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Loken waited there for his new partner to land on that cloudy day last month.

He was anxious. The master K9 trainer and handler glanced at his watch.

Eiko, an 18-month-old Dutch shepherd, was on his way from the Netherlands. But another dog was on Loken’s mind: His former canine partner, Kaiser.

An officer’s K9, deputies say, is more than a co-worker. It’s a family member.
