Iowa City Police Chief Sam Hargadine’s duties are mostly administrative, but that hasn’t kept him from taking on a cold case in recent weeks.
The evidence: a poor-quality photo copy of a decades old newspaper clipping. The mystery: Who was Edward Leeney?
Leeney was an Iowa City police officer in the 1920s. According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, Leeney was killed April 29, 1926. He was 32. The entry on the memorial page reads: “Patrolman Leeney was killed when his police motorcycle collided with a streetcar. He suffered a broken neck in the accident and was killed instantly.”
