Mike Decher, a Northampton Township police officer for 15 years, has owned dogs his whole life. When budgetary cuts started affecting K-9 units at police departments nationwide, Decher decided to take the initiative to help those dogs.
“We determined there was a need for assistance with training, safety equipment, food,” Decher said. “The whole enchilada.”
He and his wife, Kim, founded the PA K9 Assistance Foundation in January 2010. The foundation solicits donations, and then they determine what other police need for their K-9 units, whether it’s food, training equipment, safety equipment, or whatever else might be needed.
