On the job catching criminal suspects, he fell and hurt his hip and neck during an arrest. Later, arthritis slowed him further.

At age 13, Nike, a Belgian long-haired shepherd, retired from the New Castle County Police Department after helping to apprehend more than 150 suspects with his partner, Senior Cpl. Mark Tobin. For their work, Nike and Tobin earned the American Kennel Club’s 2010 Award for Canine Excellence. Nike was one of five dogs honored nationwide for service to their communities.
