Deputy Vince Chunn of the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office says when a dog is paired with a K-9 law enforcement officer, he becomes in equal parts a family pet, a companion and an on-the-job partner.
This weekend, Chunn and his 4-year-old Belgian malinois, Sultan, became something else. They were teammates in a competition. Chunn and Sultan were among 30 competitors from 17 Northern California police agencies taking part in a K-9 contest at a Manteca park.
“They work with you, they come home with you, they spend time with your family,” Chunn said. “They’re still a tool to be used, but you become attached to them.”
