New policy requires body armor for uniformed police officers in Springfield

In response to a recent nationwide surge in law enforcement officer deaths, Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams said he will require all uniformed officers on patrol to wear body armor.

“If one of my officers got shot and wasn’t wearing a vest, I couldn’t live with myself knowing I could have done something,” Williams said.

Currently, officers are encouraged to wear vests, but are only required to keep it at “arm’s reach” unless involved in a high-risk action, Williams said.
