When the parents of a Pennsylvania officer killed in the line of duty learned that only four of the Cape Coral police K-9 Unit’s six dogs had bulletproof vests, they knew what they had to do.
They bought and donated two K-9 vests, worth more than $1,000, that the dogs donned for the first time last week.
“We did not hesitate; I was ready to write the check right there and then,” Debbie Burnfield said.
Debbie and her husband, Rick, moved to Cape Coral in August.
Their son, Nathan, 27, died Nov. 4, 2008, when he was struck by a dump truck while assisting at an accident scene. He was an officer with the South Strabane Township Police Department, near Pittsburgh.
