Canine joins Great Barrington police

Leaning on community support in a way it never has before, the police department has a new four-legged asset to help maintain law and order.

Jori, a 20-month-old German shepherd from Slovakia, is in training to become the town’s first K-9 officer. The dog will provide assistance in building searches, traffic stops, and tracking suspects and missing persons.

Officer Timothy Ullrich and Sgt. William Bartini began looking into procuring a police dog four months ago. Though outside K-9 units have been called in for serious cases, Ullrich discovering there were as many as 70 calls in the last year where a dog would have been helpful in their investigation.
