If  Rex is “government property,” he should get first dibs on the tv remote when he retires….

Rex the Sahuarita police dog has sniffed his last load of marijuana and faced down his last criminal.

The 7-year old Belgian Malinois has been retired from the Sahuarita Police Department because “he is coming to the end of his usefulness as a police dog,” Sgt. Matt McGlone said, adding that Rex will not be replaced.

“There is not much sense in continuing the program” by acquiring a new dog while the town is cutting costs, said McGlone, a department spokesman. Rex will officially retire April 10, but “he won’t be out on the street anymore. There is a process now of his being decommissioned. They normally neuter them and handle any existing medical issues,” McGlone said. “It’s government property. There’s a pile of paperwork.”
