A Fond du Lac police officer shot twice during a Sunday standoff that claimed the life of a fellow policeman is making remarkable progress in his recovery at Theda Clark Medical Center.

Officer Ryan Williams, 33, “is doing phenomenal,” Dr. Raymond Georgen, the director of trauma at the hospital, said Thursday at a news conference. “He’s off the ventilator. He’s eating on his own. He’s awake and alert. He’s done so well and exceeded our expectations and has now been transferred out of the intensive care unit and is on the regular surgical floor.”
