All proceeds from the day’s event will go towards vesting Suffolk County Sheriff’s department’s newest K9 in training, Jax, who is partnered with Sergeant Corey Lewis.

Boston, MA (October 5, 2012) Last Memorial Day, 7 year old Dracut resident, Kaylee Wiroll raised over $1400 to donate a bullet and stab protective vest for K9 Joka of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s department through the East Taunton, nonprofit, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. The life-saving body armor costs $1031 and the vest was embroidered in memory of the beloved Wiroll family Rottweiler, Brady. The remaining funds were combined with general donations to help an additional police K9.
In an effort to continue to help the police K9s, Kaylee is currently being featured in the 2013 Vested Interest in K9s Calendar in the month of September with Corporal Tim Frates and K9 Joka of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department.
On Saturday, October 13, 2012, 10am-2pm, Kaylee will be appearing with the K9 team from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s department at Skipton’s Pet Center 274 Southampton St. Boston, MA autographing calendars, which are available for purchase onsite for $15. “Big Blue” the Vested Interest in K9s costumed police dog character will be on site for a photo taking opportunity. SHERIFF’S CANINES ARE ‘VESTED’ EMPLOYEES

Working side by side with their law enforcement handlers, police canines search woods and swampy areas for armed suspects, hunt for lost children and comb neighborhoods for Alzheimer’s patients.

They’re partners against crime and to do the often dangerous work, they need the same protection as their human handlers, who many times wear protective vests.

On Friday, the canines at the Bristol County Sheriff’s Department received five new protective vests, compliments of Sandy Marcal of East Taunton and her nonprofit agency, Vested Interest in K-9s Inc.

The vests, which cost $1,006 each, were provided free of charge.

Sudbury girl continues efforts to help protect police dogs

Officer Tom Krutka with 5 1/2 year old K9 partner, Jax of the Southwick police dept. with 12-year-old Lily Aisenberg. Lily is hoping to raise $735 to cover the cost of a new bullet protective vest for K9 Jax on Feb. 19 at Especially for Pets in Sudbury.

She’s passionate about horses and dogs. Most recently, she experienced a day in the life of a hard working police dog.  Back in 2010, 12-year-old Lily Aisenberg of Sudbury learned of a non-profit program that provided protective vests for police dogs in Massachusetts called Vested Interest in K9s and decided to join their efforts.

Lily contacted Sandy Marcal, president of Vested Interest in K9s, Inc, and asked how she could help. Through coin drives at local businesses and a fundraising day at Especially for Pets in Wayland and Sudbury, Lily successfully raised $735 to donate towards a vest for K9 Charon of the Wilbraham Police Department.

Chelmsford K9 part of fundraising for protective vest

For two years, Officer Dave Leo of the Chelmsford Police Department has worked with Axel, one of the toughest cops on the force. Axel, who has unnerving golden eyes and coal-black fur, is the only police officer in Chelmsford with four legs and one of the few without a bulletproof vest.

On Sunday, Sept. 19, the group Vested Interest in K9s will hold an event called “Dog Day Afternoon” at the Felos Art Center in Stoughton to raise money to buy a vest for Axel. Six Massachusetts K9 teams, including Leo and Axel, will give demonstrations and a watercolor painting of the six dogs will be unveiled and offered for silent auction.

The artist, Elaine Ostrander, is an animal lover who has frequently painted canines. Sandy Marcal, president of Vested Interest in K9s, said the artistic element makes this fundraiser unique in the history of the organization.
