Master Trooper John Lopez could have called for help and kept on driving home when he saw a woman standing next to a body on Riverview Road on Sept. 4, 2009.
But he flipped a U-turn instead and saved the life of Mark Edwards, who had collapsed just as Lopez was finishing his shift patrolling highways near Sterling.
Lopez and Trooper Matt Lasater, who patrols in Adams County, were honored Friday afternoon at the Governor’s Mansion by Citizens Appreciate State Troopers, or C.A.S.T., which each year acknowledges patrol officers who have gone above and beyond their duty requirements.
The troopers are given a plaque and a pin that symbolizes the community and the State Patrol coming together.
Lasater was honored for his work in a murder-suicide case on March 24, 2009. He was on the hunt for Brian Patterson, who was suspected of killing his estranged wife and then fleeing their Aurora home with their daughters Brianna, 4, and Aliyah, 3, in the car.
Lasater and other troopers tracked the LoJack signal from Patterson’s car.
