Columbia State Police Post 15 has made this Christmas very special for eleven youngsters from their coverage area with a shopping spree.
The “Shop With A Trooper” program kicked off the first of what is to be an annual event last Thursday night with several State Troopers from the Columbia post taking time to treat the children to dinner at Pizza Hut in Columbia followed by a trip to Wal-Mart for a little Christmas shopping.
One child was selected with help from their local community based service program and school organizations from each of the KSP Post 15 counties including; Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Clinton, Metcalf, Green, Taylor, Marion, Washington, Russell and Monroe Counties.
According to Columbia KSP Post 15 Captain Greg Baird the post decided to break the shopping spree into to two groups by splitting the counties between the Columbia and Campbellsville Wal-Mart stores.
Six children from Adair, Clinton, Cumberland, Metcalfe, Monroe and Russell Counties met in Columbia, while the other five children met in Campbellsville.
The children were given $100 each to spend on whatever they wanted, and were escorted through the store by one of the volunteer Troopers in full uniform.
“We wanted a way to help out the less fortunate children during Christmas time,” Baird stated, “and it helps give the kids positive contact with the state police.”
As the children made their way though the store picking out items Wal-Mart Co-Manager Andy Watts, who was on hand to help the children locate some of the items they were looking for and decided to add an additional $10 for each child.
The program is done through the Kentucky State Police Professional Association along with donations from local residents and businesses.
“We really appreciate the support and donations we received from the local residents who contributed to helping the kids have merry Christmas as well as Wal-Mart and Pizza Hut for their contributions in making the program a success,” said Baird.
Along with Baird eight other troopers volunteered for the Columbia shopping spree including; Sgt. Pat Williams, Sgt. Jamie Heller, Trooper Jamie Richard, Trooper Kenny Perkins, Det. B.J. Burton, Trooper Donnie Richmond, Trooper Tracy Haynes and K-9 Unit Trooper Wesley Martin.
