Darryl Forté is picked to lead KC Police Department, plans quick action
When Deputy Chief Darryl Forté started as a Kansas City police officer 26 years ago, his sergeant told him he was too nice to people.
The sergeant suggested Forté pursue a career in social work.
Instead, Forté decided to get promoted.
“I knew I could be a change agent,” he said.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office just got a big boost from an unlikely source.
A generous donation is helping out the Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit. One guy that is not happy with Houston is Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger. We sent him home on crutches after the Texans’ 17-10 victory. But, Big Ben as they call him, seems to have a big heart after making a big donation benefiting the HCSO.

Lakeville woman authors K9 officer’s story of service
For one who didn’t follow a traditional path of becoming an author, one Lakeville woman has written quite a resume.
“Michigan and Rookie: Guardians of the Night” by Joaquin Guerrero, as told by 22-year Lakeville resident Barbara Marshak, was released Sept. 2 by Twin Cities-based Beaver’s Pond Press.

Gary cops raise money for K-9
When Gary police need help of the four-legged variety to help chase down a suspect or locate hidden drugs, they must call another law enforcement agency and hope there’s a K-9 team that can respond quickly.
Patrolman Irving Givens said he and many co-workers were frustrated by the department’s lack of this important tool.
And although Givens, an 11-year veteran, resigned recently to take a railroad security job, he is leaving behind a significant contribution.

San Ramon K-9 Unit Honored
The dogs of San Ramon’s K-9 unit were honored Friday afternoon at the Bollinger Canyon Animal Hospital by being presented with portraits of themselves.
“We want to give thanks for the service these dogs do, they put themselves in the line of duty every day,” said veterinarian Sandy Block.
Officials at the animal hospital commissioned local artist Lori Depole to paint the portraits of Dar, Deny and Bongo, the San Ramon K-9 units three German Shepherds.

These men and women will provide the department with a much-needed boost in manpower.

Columbus police officer Huffman named officer of month
A Columbus police officer who played a key role in solving more than 100 car break-ins won Officer of the Month honors for August at the Columbus Police Department.
Officer Suzanne Huffman kept her eyes on a suspect while she was working a detail to nab a thief in the Auburn Avenue area.
Police Department rallies support for bike ride honoring fallen officers
Fond du Lac Police Department hopes to raise awareness and funds for the annual Police Unity Tour bike ride.
The tour will be held next May. Police officers from across the United States will start in New Jersey and ride 40 to 100 miles per day for four days. The ride ends at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., where participants will hold a candlelight vigil for fallen officers, said Detective Pat Primising of the Fond du Lac Police Department.

Hero plaque dedicated for fallen Chesco police officer
When former North Coventry Police Chief Daniel W. Gulden died in 1959, there was no one on the force to take his place.
Not for lack of experience or support, but because — according to one of his successors, James DeAngelo — he was the only officer on the force in the then-mostly rural Pottstown area police department.

Dog saved by Miami-Dade police officers to get new home
Monday night, Samantha the German shepherd was yelping in pain on a dark Miami street, still bleeding from fresh wounds after a car struck her and drove away.
Two days later, she had been taken in by an animal rescue group. A Deerfield Beach clinic volunteered to provide her surgery.
And she got a new name — Samantha Ray. The Ray was to honor of one of her saviors, Miami-Dade police Detective Roy Rutland.
