Sheriff’s deputy hailed as hero for stopping runaway car
A sheriff’s deputy was hailed as a hero today for positioning his patrol car in front of a car that had lost its brakes on a hill in La Crescenta at more than 50 mph and stopping the vehicle before it crashed on a curve, authorities said.
The incident happened at about 11:20 a.m. Thursday on southbound Pennsylvania Avenue south of Foothill Boulevard, the sheriff’s department reported.
Deputy Marcelo Ruiz was driving the patrol car, accompanied by reserve Deputy Alfred Danelian, when they saw a woman in a Ford Focus “frantically trying to get their attention as she drove down (the) hill,” sheriff’s Sgt. Debra Herman of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station said in a statement.

Wooster Police officers who diffused situation, saved lives, honored for efforts
Three police officers were honored by City Council for their efforts in saving the lives of two citizens over the past few weeks.
Matthew Simon, Robert Henderson and Ken Saal were presented with a Life Saving Award by Chief Matt Fisher.
According to incident reports, as summed up by Fisher, Simon and Henderson were placed in a situation in which they could have used deadly force but did not. Saal helped to locate and save a suicidal woman from Wooster Memorial Park.
Fisher went through a case synopsis for a Sept. 3 incident on the 2400 block of Montclair Avenue where Simon and Henderson were dispatched.

Eugene Police Department K-9 remembered
Rest in peace, Loek.

The Eugene Police Department reported Saturday that overnight, their K-9 Loek passed away from natural causes.
Officer Robert Rosales was preparing for work Friday when he found his partner of six and a half years passed away even though according to him Loek had been his “jovial self” just the day before.

Two- and four-legged runners race to raise money for Scranton’s K9 Unit
Despite a two-leg disadvantage, more than 200 runners raced alongside Scranton police dogs Saturday morning in the second annual 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Scranton Police Department’s K9 Unit.
“When the public comes out to support their Police Department, it’s great,” said Police Chief Dan Duffy. “By funding these officers, it’s going to make a difference on the street.”

Austin Police Department’s K9 Ghost is top dog — literally.
Ghost, with the help of his K9 officer Lt. Matt Holten, was named the United States Police Canine Association No. 1 overall dog last week at the National Trainers Certification in Detroit Lakes.
“It’s kind of humbling,” Holten said.
Holten has participated in seven national certifications with two different dogs, and although he’s come in second place before, he hadn’t come in first until now.
“I guess persistence paid off,” he said.

K-9 Officer Rock retiring from Utica Police Department
He’s retiring from the force, but may still have a few bones to pick, literally.
The Utica Police Department announced Thursday afternoon that K-9 Officer Rock, an 8 year old German Shepherd would officially be retiring from the force.
Rock and his K-9 handler, Sergeant Don Cinque began working together seven years ago and have been very active throughout his career, tracking numerous suspects.

5K run to raise money for Scranton Police Department’s K9 unit
When Scranton police K9 Officer Ecko became his partner earlier this year, Officer Kyle Kemp got the best job in the department.
“It doesn’t get any better in patrol,” Officer Kemp said. “It’s the best job in patrol and probably the most rewarding.”
But the perks of having a four-legged partner come at a high price between training equipment, medical expenses and food.
So, on Saturday, the Scranton Police Department will hold its second 5K run through the city to raise money for the entire K9 unit.
LPD gets grant from quarterback for K9
The Lafayette Police Department (LPD) will get a new K9 officer thanks to a Super Bowl Champion quarterback. Pittsburgh Steeler Ben Rothlisberger is giving the department a grant from his foundation to purchase a fifth dog.
