Valor Awards Honor Alexandria’s Heroes
The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce honored the heroism of Alexandria Fire, EMS/EMT, Sheriff and Police departments at the 25th Annual Valor Awards Luncheon. Hundreds of people attended the Tuesday event.
“To arrest a criminal, to rescue a citizen from a burning vehicle – we are blessed that these men and women rise above the situation,” said Andrew Palmieri, chair-elect of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce. “They risk their own health, safety and lives for the good of the community… Everyone in our city is in their debt.”

Cleveland County welcomes new state trooper
Nine hundred people applied. Sixty went to N.C. State Highway Basic Patrol School in Raleigh last year. Thirty-eight graduated. One is here in Cleveland County.
The Highway Patrol recently welcomed a new trooper to the county, J. Prescott III.
Prescott said he’s always wanted to be in law enforcement. He was a retail manager for grocery store chains in Florida, Asheville and Henderson.

Daughter to follow in slain police officer’s footsteps
Nine months after her father was gunned down in his police uniform outside his home July 18, an emotional Jada Bailey and her mother carefully retired his badge to the Superintendent’s Honored Police Star case at Chicago Police headquarters Tuesday morning.
If the young woman gets her way, Michael Bailey’s star number 13970 will soon be replaced on Chicago’s streets with her own.
The 24-year-old revealed her courageous plan to follow in her slain father’s footsteps and take the police entrance exam after hundreds of brother officers in dress blues and Mayor Daley honored her father in a somber ceremony.

Minnesota State Patrol awards honor heroic citizens, top DWI enforcer and Trooper of the Year
Two state troopers who rushed to save a driver having a heart attack and a young girl who called 911after watching an RV hit a pedestrian are among those recognized by the State Patrol at its annual awards presentation.
Each year, the Patrol honors citizens, members of other law enforcement agencies, troopers and State Patrol employees who performed life-saving acts or excelled in a crisis or efforts to ensure safer Minnesota roads.
The State Patrol honors Trooper Ron Richards as the 2010 Trooper of the Year. The almost 17 year State Patrol veteran received this honor for his hard work ethic and his commitment to keeping Minnesotans safe. Richards serves in the U.S. Army (both active and reserve) and is a volunteer firefighter and EMT for the Jackson Fire Department.

Cops On Top Raises Money For Special Olympics
Windy weather can’t keep a good cop down.
Guilford County deputies stood on top of the Chick-fil-a at Friendly Shopping Center in Greensboro Thursday.
They’re raising money to help the 38,000 Special Olympic athletes compete, and they’re hard work is not going unnoticed.

K-9 units train on icebreaker
Area law enforcement officials engaged their K-9 partners in training on the Icebreaker Mackinaw Maritime Museum Monday — an opportunity to challenge the dogs and familiarize them with on-ship searches.
Officials with the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Office, Cheboygan County Sheriff Department and U.S. Forest Service participated in the training on the ship Monday morning.
“All four of our dogs are trained for this, which we call apprehension training,” said Emmet County Sheriff’s Office deputy Rob Poumade. “We have to train monthly. We, as a group, try to get together every month.”

Miami-Dade’s K-9 unit receives bullet-proof vest
The four-legged members of Miami-Dade Police’s K-9 Unit are the department’s only law enforcers to have never been equipped with bullet-proof vests, that is, until Tuesday.
A non-profit organization which specializes in lifesaving equipment for police dogs donated the vest. A 6-year-old girl whose father is a Virginia police officer started the organization.

K-9 cop: Le Mars Police dog sniffs out success
Even though Pike, a German shepherd, lives and spends most his time with Le Mars Police Officer Mark Reed, Pike is not like other families’ dogs.
“He’s never just a pet. He’s my partner,” Reed said.
The duo just competed in a U.S. Police Canine Association detector dog competition in Des Moines, and Pike proved his skills, helping earn a first place team finish for sniffing out narcotics.

Spike joins Garfield County’s sheriff’s team
Spike is Garfield County Sheriff’s Office newest K-9 team member and is replacing an older officer.
The nearly 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, purchased a few months ago from Sooner State Police K9s, will replace semi-retired K-9 Officer Arco.
Spike’s handler, Deputy Logan Niles, said his new partner is trained in narcotics detection, handler protection, criminal apprehension and tracking.

GJPD K9 Honored As Red Cross Hero
The Grand Junction Police Department has three K-9 teams. The dogs are trained to search for drugs, or suspects and keep their handler and other officers safe. But, that service does put the dogs in harm’s way.
One of the dog’s bravery and love for the job have earned him a nomination for this year’s Red Cross Hero awards.
Grand Junction K-9 officer Oldo was nominated by Sheridan O’Leary. She is a Police Service Technician at the GJPD and regularly watches and helps out with the department’s K-9 trainings. She’s gotten to know Oldo and his handler, Officer Geraldine Earthman as well as the other K-9 teams.
“They really love what they do. They have a lot of heart in it. Oldo shows that with everything that he does,” O’Leary explains.
