New York Mets to host family of slain police officer
The favorite baseball team of Det. John Falcone has invited his family to a game, VIP-style, when the Mets play the Arizona Diamondbacks at 1:10 p.m. Saturday.
“I’m very proud that they would honor my son,” his mother, Margaret Falcone, of Carmel, Putnam County, said Thursday.
On Feb. 18, Falcone was shot while he tried to disarm a Catskill man, 27-year-old Lee Welch, who had just shot and killed his wife, Jessica, in a parking lot near the Poughkeepsie Railroad Station. He was the first police officer in the city’s history to be shot and killed in the line of duty.
Dealing with his loss has been beyond difficult for his loved ones. Falcone’s mother said, “He was kind, giving and compassionate — he had beautiful qualities.”
