K-9s suit up with body armor
As Hemet officers prepare to enter a warehouse, police dog Rosco waits on a leash connected to his newly equipped armored vest, ready to attack.
His trainer, Officer Derek Maddox, gives the final order to an officer acting as a decoy suspect who is hiding during the training exercise on a recent night at the Hemet city industrial yard.
The K-9 unit’s three Belgian Malinois are training with the new body armor after a New Mexico woman donated two bulletproof and knife-resistant vests. The department already had one vest donated several years ago.

Sheriff plans annual Christmas party
Another diverse crowd is expected at the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office fourth annual “politically incorrect” Christmas tree-trimming party Saturday.
“It’s certainly not as incorrect as it once was,” Sheriff Jim Alderden said of the event.
A sign by the secular-oriented Colorado Coalition of Reason will be on display along with a menorah, Christmas trees and a nativity scene.
The nontaxpayer-funded, public event will be from 10 a.m. to noon. It will include carolers, rides in a horse-drawn carriage, prayer and refreshments at 2501 Midpoint Drive.
The event began in 2007 in response to efforts in Fort Collins to avoid religious holiday decorations on public property.
Marvin Strauss with Colorado Coalition of Reason, who wore rubber gloves to shake hands with Alderden last year, said he plans to attend this year.
“Sheriff Alderden has been very gracious to invite us to participate both in 2009 and 2010,” he said.
But Strauss said he objects to the event’s title.
