Officer Fights To Keep Police Dog

Monterey Police Officer Jason Newby has spent hundreds of hours working alongside his four-legged partner Abel, a five-year-old German Shepard, until budget cuts forced the city to cut the position last week.

“Abel and I have been together since 2006,” said Ofc. Newby. “He’s been a great tool as far as a deterrent and we do building searches and commercial burglaries and so forth we responded to a lot of calls together.”

The city’s K-9 unit, which included Ofc. Newby and Able, will no longer exist. While Newby was able to keep his job as a regular patrol officer, Able is out of work. Usually K-9 dogs are sold to another department, but Ofc. Newby said he just can’t let that happen.

“I would say it’s near impossible for me to separate from him at this point,” said Newby.

The department is trying to help Newby raise more than a thousand dollars to buy the dog. Even with the deadline ticking, Newby said he isn’t too worried, knowing he’ll come up with the money somehow.

“I am going to keep him one way or the other.”
