Aledo gets police dog

he Aledo Police Department will have a new canine officer patrolling the streets soon.

Dozer, a 2 1/2-year-old black lab, was picked up last week at the LaFollette K-9 Training Center in Strafford, Mo., Aledo Police Chief Mike Sponsler said.

Officer Adam Moseley and the dog will undergo two weeks of training starting May 11.

“He was committed to raise $8,000 and then the city would fund the program,” Sponsler said.

Dozer’s primary responsibility will be drug-sniffing searches, but he will be used for other chores, too.

“Tracking is one of the things we’re going to add,” Sponsler said. “This would help us find a lost child or lost person, and we really believe that would be a great asset, not only to the department, but to the community.”

The Mercer County Sheriff’s Department also has a K-9 unit.
