Gilbert police cars to get traffic light interruptors

GILBERT – Gilbert police will be the first in Arizona to equip their cars with a device that makes it easier to get to emergencies by turning traffic signals green.
The Town Council last week approved the installation of signal interrupters in all of the town’s police cars after a six-month trial showed that the devices decreased response times and improved safety.
The town’s Fire Department has used the devices for several years.
“We’re also first responders,” police Sgt. Andrew Duncan said. “I’ve gone to enough emergencies to know how frustrating it can be when you want to get there to help and you get tied up.”
It will cost about $77,000 to fit Gilbert cruisers with the signal interrupters, town records show.
