The Highlands County Sheriff’s Office has updated its Web site – www.highlandssheriff.org. – and that’s good news for the public.
The Web site, among other things, connects users to public records, accident reports and requests for background checks by mail.
Casa Grande Neighborhood Watch
Hey, my grandma was ahead of her time! Course back in her day, we just called it “being nosy.”
“We’ve got to have the help, folks. We’re growing so fast we cannot have an officer on every street all the time, and we need help.”
That was the thrust of the message from Casa Grande police Cmdr. Mike Keck during Thursday’s meeting to attempt to drum up interest in the Neighborhood Watch program or to reinvigorate ones already organized.

Are you fit enough to be an Illnois State Police officer?
Unlike Chicago Police Department officers, members of the Illinois State Police have to meet fitness standards. Officers must meet these standards each year in four areas.
If they fail they can take the test again within 90 days. If they fail again they are given a different “physical ability test,” according to Sgt. Luis M. Gutierrez, department public information officer. If they fail that test twice they are referred for medical evaluation and possible termination.
What an idiot
He’s just lucky no one was injured or killed.
A Washington state teenager has been sentenced to three years in a California prison for tricking 911 dispatchers into sending a SWAT team to the Orange County home of a randomly selected family.
Flint’s mayor reorganizing PD
FLINT (WJRT) — (03/28/08)–He’s promising no police layoffs, but Flint’s mayor is downsizing supervisors in the Flint police force as part of a budget-cutting move.

YUCCA VALLEY — Thursday night was a special night at Applebee’s, special as in Special Olympics. The “Tip-A-Cop” fund-raiser earned $2,615 for the Morongo Basin chapter by having off-duty officers serve dinner and drinks from 5 to 9 p.m., and then donate their tips to the local cause.
NEATFest
I shamelessly stole this right from Scott, and I will admit when I read the name “NEATFest,” I immediately thought it was a couple of chicks pimping the joys of cleaning and organization. The real thing sounds a lot more fun!
Portsmouth (Virginia) NEATFest is coming on May 3rd, 2008! This even is a change from the previous years’ NEAT Summits.
Creating more of a carnival atmosphere and brining displays and presentations from many units within the Police Department.
This year’s event will be held at North Landing, (the old PortSide site) at Crawford and North Streets.
Please contact 757-393-8093 for details.
I believe sponsorships are still available and being sought!!!

San Bernadino patrol officers to be given tasers
SAN BERNARDINO – In hopes of reducing injuries during arrests, every police officer patrolling the streets will be issued a Taser within months.San Bernardino police has ordered a $13,000 shipment of 120 yellow Taser X26s, which is a new model. The stun guns will shoot two probes with charges of 1,200 watts.
The shocks essentially override a suspect’s central nervous system long enough for police to control the person.
The officers will be trained in the next six months.
“It’s a benefit to everybody, and it’s another tool we can use in the war on crime,” said Sgt. Rich Lawhead, president of the San Bernardino Police Officers Association. “It’s a step in the right direction to equip every officer.”
